OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Cyber on November 5, a model for security researchers investigating software vulnerabilities and verifying whether fixes work. The company is initially offering it through Codex and the API to a select group of approved Daybreak Red customers. The limited launch gives those teams access to a tool that can help establish whether a suspected flaw is exploitable before maintainers decide how urgently to patch it. OpenAI launch announcement

What the benchmarks measured

In OpenAI’s ExploitGym evaluation, where the model is given a known vulnerability on a remote test target, GPT-6 Cyber scored 48.5%, compared with 32.1% for GPT-5.6 Cyber. A separate test asked models to find flaws in web applications without source code. In that test, GPT-6 Cyber found 40.3% of the target vulnerabilities, compared with 32.0% for GPT-6 Astra. The first evaluation measures the ability to exploit a specified flaw. The second measures the ability to discover vulnerabilities in the first place. Both results come from the developer’s own evaluation environments. OpenAI’s benchmark results

A tool that can reproduce a flaw may help maintainers distinguish a reproducible problem from a plausible-looking report. For a security team, the remaining work includes checking the affected versions, confirming the practical impact and testing a fix in its own environment. That is where a lab result becomes useful evidence for an engineering decision.

Why access is restricted

OpenAI classified the model’s cybersecurity capabilities as Critical under its Preparedness Framework, a step above its previous cyber model. The rating reflects the capabilities that the company measured. OpenAI says it applies monitoring aimed at detecting actions outside authorized scope and requires IP allowlisting by default for Daybreak Red API access, with limited exceptions. That allows participating organizations to restrict where their API credentials can be used. OpenAI launch and safeguards details

What a security team can learn from the rollout

A practical test of the model’s value is how much verified work it helps a team complete. Useful measures include the time needed to reproduce a finding, the proportion of reports that a maintainer confirms and the time needed to verify a patch. Those figures would tell customers more about day-to-day value than a single benchmark score. OpenAI says it plans to expand availability to other Daybreak Red customers progressively.
